How Long the Latvia Student Residence Permit Lasts
The permit is issued either for one academic year — renewable at the end of each year — or for the full duration of a short programme.
Renewal requires three things: continuing enrolment, no outstanding academic debts, and ongoing compliance with migration requirements.
Working While You Study
Students on this permit can work up to 20 hours per week during term time. During official vacation periods, full-time work is permitted, subject to the relevant conditions. Work cannot interfere with studies and must comply with immigration law.

Documents Required for a Latvia Student Visa or Residence Permit
The application is submitted to PMLP (Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs). You will receive a personal code Latvia upon registration, which is required for healthcare, banking, and other services. Where available, eSignature Latvia can be used for certain steps in the process, and an ID card Latvia will be issued once the permit is approved.

Important: This Permit Does Not Lead Directly to Permanent Residence
The latvia student residence permit is not a direct basis for obtaining a permanent residence permit (PRP). Time spent on a student permit does not count toward the residence period required for PRP. The clock starts only once you switch to a qualifying basis of stay.
Switching to a Different Permit After or During Studies
A student can change their status at any point — mid-studies or after graduation. Common transitions include:
- an employment-based residence permit (payroll employment)
- an EU Blue Card, where qualifications and salary thresholds are met
- a startup residence permit
- a permit as a board member of a Latvian company
- any other lawful basis of stay
