It is a type of residence permit that presupposes a permanent legal passive income.
Who can receive this type of residence permit?
- Persons who intend to and are prepared to reside in Portugal for 183 days per year.
- Persons who can certify a documented, legal, stable, passive income.
Requirements:
The monthly income per applicant = EUR 725 (as of 2022). In case of a family move, there is a minimum passive income requirement of 1/2 of the subsistence minimum for the second spouse and 1/3 of the subsistence minimum for each child.
A sufficient amount of passive income to live in Portugal:
- Principal applicant: subsistence minimum = €8,700 per year,
- Adults (persons over 18 years of age): 1/2 of the subsistence minimum = €4,350 per year,
- Children under 18 and financially dependent children – 30% of the subsistence minimum = €2,610 per year.
Permitted sources of passive income for applying for a residence permit in Portugal:
- rental income from real estate,
- dividends from legal entities,
- dividends from bank deposits and securities,
- payments for copyright and royalties,
- pensions and insurance payments.
The required procedures are:
- complete the forms and declarations,
- attach the relevant documents to the D7 visa application form,
- submit the documents to the Portuguese diplomatic representation.
Following the acceptance of the application for a residence permit in Portugal, the applicant is granted a D7 Rentier’s Visa. The visa is valid for a period of 4 months. Once you have entered the territory of Portugal, you must apply for a residence permit. This type of visa enables you to stay legally in Portugal throughout the entire period of waiting for a residence permit decision, even if it exceeds the indicated 4 months.

Procedure for obtaining a D7 – Retirement Visa
Preparing all necessary documents* in order to apply for residence:
- completed visa application form,
- 2 photos (format 3×4),
- original foreign passport and copies of all pages,
- documents verifying your financial situation (the availability of the minimum necessary funds for your stay in Portugal), this can be a bank account statement,
- documents verifying the availability of accommodation in Portugal (flat or house rental contracts, documents confirming the availability of real estate property in the country),
- apostilled certificate of cleanliness (absence of criminal record),
- a signed authorization from the applicant to check the criminal status of the applicant (criminal record in Portugal),
- full medical insurance (it is essential). *All documents must be notarized and translated into Portuguese.
- for retired people, they should additionally provide the following documents: a copy of their pension certificate, with obligatory indication of the amount of their pension.
- Apply documents to the Consulate of Portugal in your country of residence (personal presence is compulsory),
- Once the documents are successfully submitted, the average waiting time for a decision is 60 days.
- Take back the documents (passport) with the D7 visa stamped on it,
- Upon arrival in Portugal, you need to contact the local SEF (Immigration Department) https://www.sef.pt regarding the issuance of the residence permit.
- You can apply for citizenship after 5 years of residence in Portugal.
